Description
Reprint of this extremely rare pamphlet published anonymously in 1624, of which only one copy was known at the time.
Entirely off-price.
ONE OF 100 NUMBERED COPIES ON LAID PAPER, after two copies on vellum.
The publisher Jules Gay, a socialist and bibliophile specialising in galant literature and licentious books, attributed this work, published anonymously in 1624, to Adrien de Monluc in defence of prostitutes who were being persecuted by the Paris police, who were trying to expel them from the capital. In a foreword, he lists other pamphlets dedicated to the same cause. The present edition was ordered destroyed by a judgement of the Seine Criminal Court on 22 May 1863.
In the 20th century, Adrien de Monluc was once again brought out of oblivion by the historian and publisher Ilia Zdanevitch, who published several of his works with illustrations by Picasso and Miro.
Fine contemporary binding.
4 copies in France: 3 at Tolbiac (BnF), 1 at the Mazarine library. 6 abroad: United Kingdom (British Library, Oxford), Germany, United States (Library of Congress and Princeton), Canada.
