A fine copy in an elegant and rare Art Deco binding by Robert Paris.

"Born on 26 August 1899 in Boulogne-sur-Seine, Robert Paris joined a book gilder's at the age of fourteen, where he worked as a labourer for six months. He was then taken on by Victor Beauregard, a regular book gilder, who taught him to push titles. In 1917, he joined Constant Dubosq as a young worker, and it was there that he really learned the trade of book gilder. Mobilised in 1918, he returned to his job in 1921, always keen to learn more. He met Émile Maylander, who agreed to take him on outside his working hours. He then worked as a gilder at Georges Cretté, before setting up as a craftsman in 1939, just a few months before the war. He was mobilised and did not return to work until September 1940. He was one of Georges Huser's main gilders, and later Pierre-Lucien Martin's gilder for the classics. Ill, he had to leave the profession in 1965 after more than fifty years of professional practice and died on 9 March 1974. His workshop was not taken over, but his equipment was acquired by several of his clients, notably Belgian. (FLÉTY, Dictionary of French bookbinders from 1800 to the present day)
