Autograph signed letter to resistance fighter, politician and writer Pierre de Bénouville :

"For Pierre Guillain de Benouville
on behalf of François Mitterrand".

The unfailing friendship between François Mitterrand and Pierre Guillain de Benouville began when they met at the Collège Saint-Paul in Angoulême in the late 1920s. Later, in 1942, when Mitterrand joined the Resistance, he met up again with Bennouville, who was already linked to the Fight and NAP. He will recount the epic story of these terrible years in The Morning Sacrifice, of which Mitterrand, President, quoted a long passage during theSpeech in tribute to the Resistance fighter Henri Frenayon 20 September 1988. A few years earlier, in 1984, Benouville had vouched before the Assembly for François Mitterrand's resistance to attacks by Jacques Toubon and Alain Madelin: "The man I am has come here this evening to bear witness: François Mitterrand was one of us".  Only Mitterrand's death in 1996 put an end to this unfailing friendship, and Benouville saluted him one last time by keeping vigil one whole night over the body of his deceased friend.
