"To Marcel Proust, very affectionately. R. de Flers".

Robert de Flers was Proust's classmate at the French School. The two friends had a youthful affair, a year before Proust met Reynaldo Hahn, and Robert de Flers went on to marry Victorien Sardou's daughter, Geneviève, and became one of the most prominent playwrights.

This photograph, from Marcel Proust's family album, was exhibited twice at the Bibliothèque Nationale de France. (L’Écriture et les Arts, n° 183).
