"To Mr J. Ernest Charles
tribute from the author
Calet
A literary journalist, Jean Ernest-Charles (1875-1953, pseudonym of Paul Renaison) was the first president of the Syndicat national des journalistes in 1918.
"In 1935, a book was published that quickly became the subject of scandal. La Belle Lurette by Henri Calet. The voice of a child recounting adults who are too indifferent to social norms in a working-class environment elicits negative comments from both sides: from the left, because this working-class milieu is too tinged with anarchism, and from the right, because it describes human misery too crudely in a country that claims to be resolutely modern".
Uncommon.
