RARE FIRST SEPARATE EDITION, PRINTED SEPARATELY FROM THE NRF (No. 281, 1 February 1937).
It has been expanded from the first version of the text, which appeared as the preface to The Wonders of the Sea (collection of plates based on watercolours by Paul A. Robert, Plon, 1936).
According to a note by Julien P. Monod on the copy kept at the Valerianum, 40 copies were printed.
