"To my friend J.-B. Soulié
Sainte-Beuve".
The copy is enriched with 3 SELF-LETTERS signedThe following are two letters, both addressed to the same addressee, two of which relate to this volume:
- "My dear Soulié, please accept this small volume that is not selling. Would you please send me by post the address of young Hedouin, a friend of your son's? As soon as you can, please. A thousand regards, Sainte-Beuve."
- Before page 389, on which appears the poem dedicated to J.-B. Soulié :
"Tuesday, April 14, 1840, My dear friend, Could you tell me by a little word which day at the end of this week I shall be lucky enough to meet you at the Arsenal Library. Please sign your name distinctly in reply so that in correcting the proof of the little room (page 389) dedicated to you I run no risk of falling into your almost homonymous Frederic: for he takes a scruple out of my spelling. This is what it is, dear friend, to have not printed enough. Your friendship. Sainte Beuve."
- The latter is probably in the hand of his secretary and signed by the author:
"On 26th Xbre 1868, Dear Sir, It's Tuesday that Mrs Favart and Mr Thierry, do me the honour of coming to dinner. I'm glad you want to be there. Thank you for everything. Sainte-Beuve. P.S. A little before 7:00, please."
