Giovanni Rosini develops the story of Gertrude and Egidio, secondary characters in the Engaged by Alessandro Manzoni, considered to be the first Italian historical novel. Rosini himself is said to have been planning to write a historical novel with Erasmus as its protagonist as early as 1808. Engaged.
In a note at the beginning of volume 1, translator Jean Cohen mentions some of the cuts he would have liked to make, but was dissuaded from doing so by laudatory newspaper articles.
Elegant contemporary binding in 5 volumes, the fourth lacks a headband.

Half brown calf, smooth spine decorated with gold fillets, roulettes and fleurons, gilt title, speckled edges, bookmark. Slight discolouration to spine, corners rubbed, head and part of spine missing at head of vol. 4, small loss at head of spine ends in vol. 1. paper slightly and uniformly browned.
