The eleven short stories that make up this last collection published during the author's lifetime were published separately between 1886 and 1890 in various newspapers (Gil Blas, Le Gaulois, L'Écho de Paris, Le Figaro). Before publication, Maupassant pointed out to Victor Havard that Useless Beautywhich opens the volume, was " the rarest news that[he has] never done, it's just a symbol". which "has a hundred times the value of Field of olive trees".
