FIRST EDITION of this famous biography of Félicien Rops by his cousin, an imposing work lavishly illustrated.

ONE OF 25 COPIES ON CHINE - THE MOST LIMITED EDITION - with a double state of the intaglio hors-texte plates, a separate suite on Chine of all the other illustrations and two plates printed in colour, "Canicule" and "Seule". There follow 50 copies on vellum paper and 100 copies on Japon paper.

Two hors-texte engravings are originals by Félicien Rops1 soft varnish, Maturity (Exsteens, 51) and 1 etching, La Grève (Exsteens, 343)

A copy luxuriously bound by Georges Chevallier, whose bindings are rare.
The book is illustrated with a large reproduction of the present binding:

"Bound in full morocco with pink and olive green mosaics, inside olive green silk endpapers, inside lace, mosaic foliage. Binding by Geoorges Chevallier, 18 Rue Gay-Luassac, Paris."

The variety of techniques used for this binding probably encouraged the craftsman to use it to promote his workshop.

Small crack at head of spine, spine ends dulled.
