Description

LITHOGRAPHED POSTER by Pierre-Eugène Vibert distributed by Le Théâtre Libre for the play Coppergiven on 16 December 1895 (1895-96 season).

Copper, a satire in 3 acts by Paul Adam and André Picard focusing on the secret causes of the war, displeased the critics: The Correspondent described the plot as a "tangled web of socialist tirades"; the play nevertheless "induced great joy in the innocent public" (Jules Lemaître, Theatre impressions, p. 302).

The Théâtre Libre, founded by André Antoine and based in Paris's 10th arrondissement from 1887, was renowned for its realistic productions of the works of young naturalist writers, including plays by Henrik Ibsen and unpublished works by the Goncourt brothers, Paul Claudel and Villiers de l'Isle Adam.

Close to symbolist circles and the engravers of the review L'ImagePierre-Eugène Vibert was one of the founding members of the Salon d'Automne in Paris.
