FIRST EDITION.
A play in three acts first performed on 7 May 1906 at the Théatre Antoine.

AUTOGRAPH SIGNED MAILING:

"To you, my dear
Georges Casella
in memories
a moving 14 July
in Grindelwald
Maurice Leblanc
December 1912".

The only piece by Arsène Lupin's father, La Pitié had a success inversely proportional to that of The Gentleman Burglar, and Maurice Leblanc gave up the theatre for a while. He later adapted several of Lupin's adventures for the stage.
Perhaps he had not entirely given up hope on this play when, six years after its publication, he offered it to the future director of Comœdia ? The Parisian writer Georges Casella, who took over as editor of the revue théâtrale in 1919, was also a keen mountaineer from the age of 9 and wrote numerous articles and books on the subject. He was probably the organiser of this 14 July event in the Swiss Alps, at Grindelwald.
