Description

VERY NICE LATE 19th CENTURY JAPANESE PHOTOGRAPH ALBUM.

An astonishing specimen combining the craftsmanship of French bookbinding - ribbed spine, frames, friezes, marbled edges, clasp - and a mosaic of polychrome Japanese leather paper, the gikakushi (擬革紙).

This type of album, sold at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, was generally offered by luxury stationers and leather goods manufacturers, such as the Parisian firm Maquet on Avenue de l'Opéra, a very similar example of which we were able to sell in our catalogue devoted to Japanese bindings.

The album can hold 70 photographs in two formats: business card (55 x 85 mm) and large format (110 x 160 mm).

This copy was used very little and has not been restored. in perfect condition This is a rare condition for albums that are often very fragile and handled.
