Description

FIRST EDITION.
ONE OF THE FIRST 10 COPIES ON JAPON (this one unnumbered), followed by 10 copies on Whatman, 10 copies on Chine and 20 copies on Hollande.

Prepared by Hugo, this collection, reworked by Paul Meurice, was published posthumously in 1888; a third volume followed with the same publisher in 1893.

Pages 152-153 were cut out by the publisher following a layout error: the 4 stanzas of the poem on pages 153-154, "Toute la nature..." reappeared without a title on pages 202-203 (The BookOctave Uzanne et Quantin, 1888). On copies of the current print run, the title of this poem, "Horreur divine", still appears in the table. On the large paper copies (including this one and Paul Meurice's Chine copy), the title of the poem on pages 152-153 has been replaced by a line of dots.
