Description
HUMOROUS COLLECTION IN COLOUR orihon (accordion) FULLY ENGRAVED.
7th volume (of 13). Literally interpreted proverbs and idiomatic phrases serve as the basis for puns and anecdotes composed by Ikkado Hansui (一荷堂半水, 1828-1882) and illustrated by Utagawa Yoshiume (歌川 芳梅, 1829-1897), a disciple of Utagawa Kuniyoshi.
The work was a huge success in the Kamigata region (encompassing Osaka and Kyoto) and was reprinted many times between the end of the Edo period and the first half of the Meiji era.
Our copy appears to be identical to the one in the National Diet Library published in 1886 (Meiji 19).
Japanese accordion brochure (orihon). Tear in the first leaf due to the insertion of a cardboard insert in the spine.
