A BEAUTIFUL EDITION from an edition of 300, illustrated with 61 etchings. by Paul-Albert Laurens etched by Léon Boisson.
ONE OF THE COPIES ON CHINE WITH 3 STATES OF THE TEXT ILLUSTRATIONS, AND FOUR STATES OF THE OUT-OF-TEXT ILLUSTRATIONS.
According to the subscription form on Chine paper bound at the end of the book, this limited edition of 40 copies was divided between Chine paper and vellum.

Superb copy from the Sickles sale (12-14 December 1945, n°174), luxuriously bound in full blue morocco with partially bevelled boards, lined with green morocco, both richly decorated with geometric and floral motifs. Binding by Granghaud, who practised at the beginning of the 20th century on rue du Cherche-Midi and then rue Jean-de-Beauvais.

From the library of Cortland Field Bishop (1870-1935), one of the most important libraries of the interwar period, which included a remarkable collection of decorated French bindings. It was dispersed after his death in five successive sales held in New York on 5-8 April 1938, 25-27 April 1938, 14-15 November 1938, 26 January 1939 and 22-23 May 1940.

Contemporary binding by Granghaud. Full blue morocco, spine ribbed, gilt title, top edge gilt, boards decorated with floral decorations, finely lined in richly decorated green morocco, green silk endpapers, bookmark. Case. Dark mark on the 4th plate, probably from shoe polish.

Anatole France

Born on 16 April 1844 in Paris, and died on 12 October 1924 in Saint-Cyr-sur-Loire (Indre-et-Loire).

His real name, François Anatole Thibault, was considered one of the greatest writers and literary critics of the Third Republic.
