"I wanted to write this book to expose the loneliness of a child. And the loneliness of a child is not something you can share, especially the loneliness of a child artist. Obviously it's about me, I'm recounting my own childhood through things I've revised and invented. I was little Benoit, so he's a child artist, and therefore a lonely child. [...] Misery is a play on words and then it's psychological misery, which is abominable."(interview on France-Culture, Profiles, 1971)
