Charged by Edouard Herriot, Minister for Public Education, with a mission to study the intellectual relations between France and America, Morand embarked with his wife on the Spain to Vera Cruz, Mexico, on 20 January 1927. After a stopover in Cuba, he reached Mexico City and, thanks to a letter of recommendation from Alfonso Reyes, visited the capital under the guidance of the writer and Minister of Foreign Affairs, Genaro Estrada. Morand recounted this trip to Veracruz, Mexico City, Teotihuacán, la Puebla and then the United States in Caribbean winter published by Flammarion in 1929.
