A vagabond novelist nicknamed the "Balkan Gorki" by Romain Rolland, Panaït Istrati was, like Conrad, an uprooted writer who wrote most of his work in French. Alain Dugrand recently devoted a study to him, Panaït Istrati: Vagabond, magician, irregular, writer, as part of a day on "Les Conrad français" organised by the Société Jean Malaquais.
