HAND-WRITTEN LETTER Colette wrote to Jean Cocteau after the publication in 1935 of Portraits-Souvenirs 1900-1910 :

"Dear Jean,
I don't know where you are, but I have to tell you that your "Souvenirs are enchanting paintings!
The last one : Polar !!! And the samurai ladies !!!
Love you. I've moved, taking Maurice Goudeket with me. Come and see.

Marignan building

In 1931, Colette moved into the Hôtel Claridge on the Champs-Elysées, and in 1932 opened a beauty products shop under her own name at 6 rue de Miromesnil. The Claridge closed for renovation in 1936 and Colette and Maurice Goudeket moved into the Marignan building at number 27 on the Champs-Elysées - the couple had recently married to take part in the maiden voyage of the Normandie liner, as America could not accommodate an illegitimate couple...

Jean Cocteau

Born on 5 July 1889 in Maisons-Laffitte and died on 11 October 1963 in his house in Milly-la-Forêt. French poet, graphic designer, draftsman, playwright and filmmaker, member of the Académie française from 1955.

Gabrielle-Sidonie Colette

Born on 28 January 1873 in Saint-Sauveur-en-Puisaye (Yonne) - died on 3 August 1954 in Paris. Mime, actress and journalist, a French woman of letters known above all as a novelist, Colette was after Judith Gautier in 1910, the second woman elected member of the Goncourt academy in 1945, of which she became president between 1949 and 1954.
