A signed autograph letter addressed to the same person is inserted in the mitre-mounted envelope:

"Versailles, 7 July 1923,
My dear Master,
I have found, dear Bernard Grasset, the precious gift you kindly gave me, your "Belle histoire de Geneviève", enriched with a dedication that will make this book in my archives, first for me and then for my children, a priceless possession.
Thank you very much.

La Brière was awarded the Grand Prix du roman by the Académie française in 1923. It was a publishing success between the wars, selling 600,000 copies.

(born in Rennes on 25 March 1877 and died in exile in Kitzbühel, Austria, on 2 May 1951)
