Winner of the Prix Goncourt in 1972, L'Épervier de Maheux sold 2 million copies and was translated into 14 languages. But this unexpected success was a "catastrophe" for Jean Carrière, who fell into a deep depression. He would describe this episode fifteen years later in The price of a Goncourtwith this sentence by JL Borges as an epigraph:
"Success is a misunderstanding, perhaps the worst of all".
