Description

Autograph letter and card signed by Joyce addressed to André Breton.

  • Lovely letter, especially about his reading and writing. Napoleon - the only previously unpublished story in the collection Thatpublished by Soleil Noir in 1970 - which André Breton corrected, and by Edouard Loeb :

Grimaud, 15 August [1969 ?], red paper, 2 pages, 195 x 260 mm :
" I wanted to follow "Hebdonneros" through the corridors of the "strange building". To enter this 235-page dream on your arm like a brave parrot.
Now I'm reading "L'Épopée de la Révolte" and I have to say that I feel terribly selfish, frivolous, etc. when I read about Louis Michel's extraordinary exploits. What a life! And above all what scoundrels these bourgeois of the so-called "Belle Epoque" are. Yesterday was a deluge here; cold and rain and wind. I found myself on the beach thinking that it reminded me of something... well, yes, Dinard of course! I'm sorry to have to send you back this 'Napoléon' so quickly, as usual, I'm working furiously on it; and as always, it's grown a bit... Please don't hurry to turn over these pages; I'd be terribly sorry if you got bored.i[t]-what a second […]  I bumped into Edouard Loeb on the beach today, and I felt a twinge of sadness when I realised that now I can't be wrong: he is, and can only be, Edouard.."

  • Greetings card sent from Cairo for Christmas and the New Year, 160 x 120 mm folded in two, envelope with address of 42 rue Fontaine retained. :

"To André Breton my [ Best wishes for a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year ] They'll sing Joyce for you"
