"To Mr Lucien Descaves,
tribute by Emmanuel Berl".

"I thought I would devote this second pamphlet to the machine and the men it creates. The criticism of my first volume obliges me to deal first with other questions. Its title alone : The death of bourgeois thoughtThere were two kinds of answers: that bourgeois thought is not dead - and that it has never lived. They repeated this so often that people ended up doubting whether I wasn't some kind of Rochette trying to throw an unreal value at the public, which they had to be warned against. I felt the need to put into better form this thought whose existence I was denied."
