The work was never printed on paper.
An enlarged copy with a portrait of the author engraved on wood by Pierre-Eugène Vibert, given as a frontispiece to the edition of Diaboliques by Crès in 1912.

Barbey d'Aurevilly, who had planned to write several historical novels centred on the Chouannerie, took more than twelve years to complete this work, preoccupied with other projects. The Chevalier des Touches was published in twelve serials in Yellow dwarf from 18 July to 2 September 1863.

A rare copy in its original booklet.
Some damage and restoration to the spine, early 20th century slipcase.

Paperback. Folder with gilt title on morocco slipcase. Cracks on spine, missing at foot, spine restored, small crack on first cover, corner of first cover missing, stain on second cover. Spine of folder unstained, slipcase rubbed. Interior in good condition, with rare foxing. Small tear not affecting the text on pp. 237-38.
