BEAUTIFUL ORIGINAL WOODCUT MATRIX BY ANDRÉ MARGAT IN 1931.
Produced for the cover of the first volume ofe L'Anthologie polissonne ou Les Mémoires secrets de The Chevalier de Bécourt recounts his encounter with the devil and his marvellous adventures. edition of La Caravelle 1931 - this standing wood matrix was printed in three tones by the art print shop "Le Croquis" located at 6 rue Bezout, Paris XIVe.
A sculptor, painter, lacquerer, draughtsman and engraver, André Margat (1903-1997) joined the "Groupe des douze" (Group of Twelve) in 1932, chaired by Frantz Jourdain, and notably joined the animal artists François Pompon, Jane Poupelet, Georges Hilbert and Paul Jouve, with whom he exhibited in the salons of Jacques-Émile Ruhlmann's hotel.
The signature "A.MARGAT", which appears on the prints, was probably removed from the matrix to discourage further printing.
A three-colour proof of the period is enclosed. - 1 sheet measuring 230 x 315 mm - promotional print on RGM grape paper.
