Description

FIRST EDITION OF ILLUSTRATIONS BY GUSTAVE DORÉ.
Fifth edition of the text, 158 wood-engraved in-text vignettes, including 12 full-page compositions.

First published in 1857,  The king of the mountains is the second book inspired by Emond About's stay in Athens, after  Contemporary Greece published in 1854.
In this satirical adventure novel, About parodies the romantic figure of the pallikare, image promulgated by philhellenism contemporary with the Greek War of Independence.

A fine copy, virtually free of spotting, in an elegant contemporary binding.
