In the publisher's preface, Vonnegut states that he wrote this novel, centred on the escape of inmates from a prison, from notes written by the protagonist on scraps of paper (gift wrapping, the back of a business card, etc.).

In an editor's note, Vonnegut claims to have pieced up this novel, which centres around the story of a massive prison break, from pieces of sequentially numbered found scraps of paper belonging to the protagonist.
