A childhood friend of Valéry Larbaud, Marcel Ray (1878-1952) worked as a teacher, journalist and diplomat; he published a study on the German painter and caricaturist George Grosz, a member of the Dada movement, and translated texts by the architect Adolf Loos into French.

Le Bar de l'AmourThe 11th issue of Cahiers du mois is the first version of Ready! published the same year, then reappeared in Le Roi de la Vie et autres nouvelles (1992). In his Cahiers de JeunesseSimone de Beauvoir complained about the character of Élisabeth Lacoin, known as "Zaza", in the following terms: ".I sense a bit of reserve in Zaza; I mean, she's not quite on the same level: she didn't like Le Bar de l'amour by Soupault [...]"
