Pinget won the Prix des Critiques in 1963 for this novel, written in the space of a few months following a bet with publisher Jérôme Lindon. The author then adapted it for the stage. The play, directed by Joël Jouhanneau, premiered at the Théâtre au bord de l'eau in Vidy, Lausanne, on 5 March 1992.
