Description

FIRST EDITION of this courageous pamphlet on the excesses of the purge.

AUTOGRAPH SIGNED LETTER:

"to Georges Duhamel,
(without wishing to
but affectionately
Jean Paulhan).

This copy contains 3 typescript letters to Georges Duhamel concerning "L'affaire Paulhan". as titled in red on one of the two preserved envelopes.

A first letter, dated December 24, 1951 and signed André Parinaud, invites Duhamel, on behalf of Paulhan and Pauwels, to a meeting whose purpose is to "discuss the future of Duhamel".submit to his former companions in the Resistance a text that Louis Pauwels would like to publish in Art. This text is entitled: Letter to the Directors of the Resistance and calls into question a number of values in the name of which you fought.. "Also invited to the meeting were François Mauriac, Albert Camus, Debru-Bridel, Malraux, Blanzat, Vercors, Cassou, Guehenno, Edtih Thomas, Merleau Ponty, Sartre and Claude Roy.

In the second letter, dated 27 December 1951, Jean Paulhan corrected this: 'The letter that Mr Parinaud apparently sent you contains more than one serious error. It is particularly inaccurate for my letter to call into question any of the values for which the Resistance fought. Quite the contrary".[autograph note added]. He added that it was not he who had called the meeting, but that he would attend.

The last letter signed by Louis Pauwels, dated 28 December 1951, sets out the purpose of the meeting: "We feel it is essential that we have your opinion before taking a decision that may involve our moral and professional responsibility".

Nice outfit.
