Hubermont's inspiration for this novel came from the experience of his mother, who was committed to a psychiatric asylum following a crisis of mysticism.

P. Hubermont
The son of a miner who himself had worked as a labourer, assistant mason, artesian well driller and water carrier, Pierre Hubermont published his first texts in L'Avenir du Borinageorgan of the Belgian Workers' Party. Founding member of the proletarian review Attemptsin 1930 for his story Thirteen men in the mine, inspired by the Courrières mining disaster. Hubermont became close to Henry Poulaille, and in 1932 joined his manifesto of the "group of proletarian writers".
His collaboration with the German occupiers brought him into disrepute after the Second World War.
