"To Mr Jaujard
tribute by Romain Gary
Paris 1949".
After starting out as a journalist, he went on to work in ministerial cabinets, Jacques Jaujard (1895 - 1967) was appointed General Secretary of the National Museums in 1925, Deputy Director of the National Museums in 1933 and Director of the National Museums and the École du Louvre in 1940. During the Spanish Civil War, he oversaw the evacuation of the Prado Museum collections and other threatened treasures. As a member of the Resistance during the Occupation, he worked with the curators, against the orders of the Vichy government, to organise the removal of the Louvre's works of art and their safekeeping in the provinces. The story of this rescue was recently made into a film under the title Illustrious and Unknown. How Jacques Jaujard saved the Louvre and winner of the 2015 Emmy Awards.
