This play, inspired by his novel The Vice-Consul published in 1966, was the inspiration for the film of the same name, directed by Marguerite Duras and released in 1975. Nominated in three categories at the César Awards, it was awarded the Prix de l'Association Française du Cinéma d'Art et d'Essai and the Grand Prix de l'Académie du Cinéma.
