Description

FIRST EDITION IN STORES after the rare first edition published between 25 and 40 copies in December 1823 by the Imprimerie Royale for the author's friends.

This short story was quickly written in 1820 during a convalescent retreat. Chateaubriand, who had been a friend of the Duchesse de Duras since 1809 and had particularly appreciated the text, asked the author to publish it anonymously. The story of this young Senegalese girl, educated in France, who, at the age of 12, realises the prejudices linked to her skin colour, is considered to be the first novel in French literature to tackle the problems of racism.
