FIRST EDITION of this Rhenish legend dreamt up and drawn by Gustave Jundt, told to the very young by Alphonse Daudet. and dedicated to his son Lucien. 30 full-page woodcut illustrations by G. Jundt.
The book was printed in 2090 copies: 10 copies numbered on China, 30 copies numbered on Holland, 50 copies numbered on Japan and 2000 copies on beautiful paper from Outhenin-Chalandre.
According to Jules Brivois, only part of the main papers were printed and part of the current print run was bought back by the bookseller Chasles, who used the cover and false title pages to add a new illustration.
ONE OF THE COPIES ON JAPANThis one is unnumbered and has the final fault characteristic of the big papers.
It is furthermore linked in the rare percaline-editor to the first illustrated dish which covers only a small part of the print run.
SIGNED AUTOGRAPH CONSIGNMENT of the artist:
"to my friend Bachaumont G. Jundt."
Bachaumont was the pseudonym used by Julien Lemer (1815-1893) to sign the literary, artistic and worldly chronicles he wrote in Le Journal de Monaco. He took the defence of Gustave Jundt to several people, this artist with a brush so personal, with a feeling so true...In 1878, for example, two large paintings by the artist were hung in the Casino de Monaco: View of Monte Carlo and The olive harvest in Menton.
