The idea of a military novel had been brewing in Darien's head since 1889, but he never got round to writing it. memories of an officer in 1901 and had great difficulty getting them published.
The refusal of Stock, his historic publisher, to publish L'Epaulette was the reason for their break-up in August 1903. Darien finally signed with Charpentier et Fasquelle, who published the author's last novel in 1905.

A copy bound in simple but elegant contemporary percaline.
