ORIGINAL EDITION in 5 volumes. 

A landmark text in Christian Romanticism, its chapter on Catholic churches was at the root of the enthusiasm for Gothic architecture.

Volumes II and III close Atalapublished separately the previous year, and René published here for the first time.
These two short novels had a major influence on Romanticism, as did the The Sorrows of Young Werther by Goethe. They were quickly withdrawn from later editions.

A fine copy, almost free of foxing, elegantly bound in the period in 5 volumes.
