This famous collection grew out of the poet's clandestine activities in the Resistance: " These notes borrow nothing from self-love, the short story, the maxim or the novel. They could just as easily have been edited by a fire of dry grass. The sight of tortured blood has once made them lose their thread, reduced their importance to nothing. They were written in tension, anger, fear, emulation, disgust, cunning, furtive contemplation, the illusion of the future, friendship and love. That's how much they were affected by the event."
