Published in serial form in The New Yorker, in 1965, then in volume by Random House New-York, In Cold Blood immediately became a classic of American literature. Selling more than eight million copies, it brought Truman Capote immense fame but also plunged him into depression, deeply affected by his meeting with Perry Smith, one of the two murderers.

According to the Mystery Writers of America in 1995, the novel was ranked 54th in the list of the one hundred best crime books of all time. Guardian ranks In Cold Blood among the top 100 books written in English.
