Z first appeared in Le Journalthen, following its publication by Pierre Lafitte, was republished in serial form by the Lyonnais daily newspaper Le Progrès.
The victim of a conspiracy, aeronautical engineer Stephenson is accused of being a murderer working under the name of Z. Judge Marathon (The tragic adventure of the mime Propertius, A crime has been committed...), in love with the wife of one of Z's victims, leads the investigation.
J. Guillermin reports in his column:
"Don't start it... you'll get to the end. A model of how to interest the reader with nothing, or almost nothing: barely two murders, two suicides and two mushroom poisonings. Oh, and I almost forgot a flight, an aeroplane flight.".
A paperback copy, with its illustrated cover in colour, on which we note the presence of a frame, absent from some copies.
Small crease and corner damage to front cover. Stuck to the first white endpaper, a paperolle dated 1918 on the 30% increase in the price of the book decided by the publishers' union; stamps recalling this increase on the back of the book.
