I have suggested that blackness challenges us for 5 major reasons :
1. Blackness is a way, perhaps the only way, to the primordial unplumbed centre of our being.
2. Blackness is an antidote to the Puritan curse, which is driving this country mad.
3. Blackness holds forth the possibility of creative transcendence of the machine. This should not be taken to mean that blackness is antimachine. It means simply that machines, in the black tradition, are generative power and not soul, instruments and not ends.
4. Blackness is the real repository of the values Euro-Americans proclaimed and never lived.
5. Blackness is another chance, another way; it is the harbinger, as W. E. B. Du Bois said, "of that bright tomorrow which is yet destined to soften the harshness of the Teutonic today."

Journalist and director of the magazine Ebony From 1958 onwards, Lerone Bennett was also one of the leading figures in research into African-American history.
