Written in English, under the title Happy Dayswritten between 1960 and 1961, the play was translated into French by the author in 1962 and published by Éditions de Minuit in 1963. Roger Blin staged the play in French for the first time at the Venice Biennale and in Paris (Théâtre de l'Odéon) in autumn 1963, with Madeleine Renaud as Winnie and Jean-Louis Barrault as Willie.
