Description
FIRST EDITION of this play, which premiered on 25 February 1910 at the Théâtre du Gymnase; the text also appeared in No. 150 of theTheatrical illustration on 28 May 1910.
One of the first 30 copies on Madagascar, only large paper (there seems to be an edition, not mentioned in the receipt, of 20 copies on Arches vellum for the Société "Les XX")
The copy is full of TWO AUTOGRAPH LETTERS SIGNED.
The first, probably addressed to a theatre director, concerns the transmission of a text for rehearsals: "I'll send you the third act. As for act two, I'll send it to you [...]. I glanced at a page of Act 3 and realised that there must have been some more or less idiotic copyist's slips of the tongue. I won't reread it now. I'll correct it on the prompter's manuscript in a few days.."
The second asks Mr and Mrs Millerand (the future President of the Republic Alexandre Millerand?) to the dress rehearsal of The Madonna on the eve of the premiere.
The play was adapted for the screen by Gennaro Righelli (La Vergine folle(1920) and Henri Diamant-Berger (1938).
