"The historian of the Ridicules of the time, which are general ridicules, wrote the history of some particular ridicules. And here they are! We found them in a small newspaper from 1869, now forgotten, Old ageand we publish them today, for the same reason that Gastine-Reinette makes boxes for the glory of the strongest pistol shooters".
Eugène Auguste Ernest Havet (1813-1889) was a French historian specialising in religious history and a professor at the Collège de France from 1854 to 1885. Thoughts by Pascal, which Barbey wrote about, and Christianity and its origins. In 1887 Barbey dedicated the Sensations of history :
"Opposed absolutely in that we both believe the religious truth, we reached out to each other and united in heart in that feeling of trust which is above all else and which God must forgive all, even error". (Correspondance générale, 9).

Bound in contemporary Bradel style, red half-percaline with corners, smooth spine decorated with a fleuron and fillets, title page, gilt title, date at foot, cover and spine preserved.
