AN EXCEPTIONAL COPY CONTAINING THE ILLUSTRATOR'S PREPARATORY WORK
The proof of issue bears the publisher's handwritten note ".reserved for the copy containing the artist's sketches / René Kieffer". It includes a suite in black on all pages and 150 original drawings, sketches and preparatory drawings (86 ff.) in watercolour, ink and coloured pencil; several were not retained for the edition.
Interesting typographical binding by René Kiefferdifferent from the publisher's binding. However, we know of another copy bound identically: this one bears the double signature "René Kieffer - Inv / Pierre Legrain", suggesting that the layout was designed by the latter. René Kieffer graduated at the top of his class from the École Estienne and worked as a bookbinder and publisher. From 1919 to 1923, he was the sole collaborator of the decorator Pierre Legrain, executing on his behalf the bindings he designed for the Jacques Doucet collection.
René Kieffer produced several of these so-called "illuminated" editions of Funny TalesThe text, probably calligraphed by the artist, complements the coloured stencil illustration.
Paul Boiraud, known as Quint, contributed to the humorous press (Laughter, Fantasia, Illustrated Fashion....) and worked with Crès, Messein and René Kieffer on a number of illustrated editions. He settled in Strasbourg, where an exhibition was devoted to him in 1954.
The most desirable copy of this edition.
(Kieffer Library. Librairie Emmanuel Fradois, n°25: an almost identical binding with Legrain's signature).
