Marguerite Audoux was 70 years old when she began writing Gentle Light, a novel of autobiographical inspiration that picks up on the story of thwarted love already told in Marie-Claire. As her eyesight worsened, Audoux was forced to buy two pairs of glasses and a magnifying glass in order to write; despite these difficulties, the project remained with her for the last three years of her life. "If I don't finish it, he'll have helped me finish it"she wrote to Antoine Lelièvre on 15 January 1934. She completed it shortly before her death.
The novel, published posthumously in October 1937, was neither the success of Marie-Clairenor the already smaller L'Workshop.
This book is part of the catalogue devoted to Marguerite Audoux that we have just published online, and is available on our website.
