"Afflicted by insomnia, René Char went through what he called "talismanic nights". During this period, he tried to deceive sleep by creating illuminated objects using paint, Indian ink, pebbles, bark, etc. Thus armed, he could create works as luminous as the flower is in the flame, the flame is in the storm. This drawing was originally done in gouache with collages and Indian ink. It is reproduced here using the Jacomet process, which produces a beautiful watercolour effect. René Char also added retouching in gouache to make the colour even more luminous".
