Maria Callas and her husband, Giovanni Battista Meneghini, at the opening of the season at La Scala in Milan on 7 December 1953 for the premiere of La Wally by Alfredo Catalani.
The success of the soprano Renata Tebaldi was quickly eclipsed by the Medea of Maria Callas.
