AUTOGRAPH SIGNED LETTER TO MARGUERITE AUDOUX:
To Marguerite Audoux
A tribute of admiration
Albert Adès
17 September 1919
The Egyptian Albert Adès and Albert Josipovici, a Frenchman born in Constantinople, met in Cairo in 1913. Together they wrote their first novel, The Worrierspublished in 1914 under the pseudonym A. I. Theix. The Book of Goha the Simple followed in 1919, having benefited, like Marie-Claire, from the support of Octave Mirbeau, who wrote the preface (dated 1916):
You will understand my emotion when you read these magnificent pages, when you know my disgust for books during the tragic, bloody days that claim our being and more than our being. Some works perform the miracle of fixing our thoughts despite the tumult of the present [...]. Simple Goha is one of these works, Goha the Simple performs this miracle.
Shortlisted for the 1919 Prix Goncourt, Goha la Simple came second behind À l'ombre des jeunes filles en fleur. The novel was made into a film by Jacques Baratier in 1958.
This book is part of the catalogue devoted to Marguerite Audoux that we have just published online, and is available on our website.
Spine creased and darkened with tears at head and tail.
